Confused
Karen and I were in Baton Rouge Tuesday night because of a referee meeting. Rendezvous after the meeting was Barnes & Noble off College.
Karen: I'm by the bathroom. Where are you?
Mark: I'm just coming out of the bathroom, and you are not here.
Karen:I'm at the bathroom by the magazines.
Mark:There are no magazines by the bathroom, and I don't think that Barnes & Noble has more than one bathroom. Go to the front of the store.
Karen: I'm here. This is so embarrassing.
Mark: Which Barnes & Noble are you at?
Karen: The one off Perkins Row.
Mark: We're at different stores. Please come pick me up.

Happy Birthday Ellen
Today is my sister birthday, and I believe it may be the first one that she's spent in Louisiana in about six years. She turns 26 today (getting old), so everyone chime in (or call her) and wish her happy birthday.
For Ellen,
Hope you have a great day today. Sorry I won't be able to make dinner, but duty calls.
Happy 26th birthday
Love you!

This morning was hell!
Uncontrolled breathing, burning lungs, and the need to unnecessarily increase pace is an accurate description of this morning's run. The first session of the year in sub-45 degree weather is never a good experience, especially when one's habitat is southern Louisiana.
I started the morning (ended my day) at 6:45 for a trial 10-K run. The past week-and-a-half had me keeping the exercising at a minimum as I was battling a nasty cold. Kind of difficult to run when you're having trouble taking deep breaths without coughing. Surprisingly I finished with a 6:55/mile pace...43:37/10K. I think my ability to run at this pace was due to the fact that I was consistently trying to finish the run. The cold air running through my lungs had me mouth-breathing the whole time. Not a pleasant experience, but one that resulted in a pleasant outcome.
Matthew had inspired me to start up the training again by running in his first race this past weekend in the "mistake by the lake". He competed in a 10K that was accidentally measured at 6.7 miles...not surprising for the Lake Charles crowd. His time...55:07. Not bad at all!
Less than two weeks until the Cajun Cup. I'll have the shirt details to you guys by Friday.

New, favorite NFL team...after the Saints, of course
Mike Singletary was introduced as the 49ers new coach earlier last week. He just lost his first game as an NFL head coach, and his press conference is classic.
At least watch through 2:30 (especially the rant about Vernon Davis, who got sent to the showers early for committing a stupid personal foul):

LSU pockets run deep
Sports talk radio was filled with conspiracy Monday and Tuesday morning as video emerged regarding a referee making a hit on the South Carolina quarterback as he made a move across the middle during Saturday night's SEC showdown.
I believe (according to several sportcasters) that the ref is a former Nebraska college player who became lost in the moment. The accuracy of that statement is beyond me, but it makes for a great rivalry.
If I had picked SC last weekend I would be protesting to the commish right now!

Cajun Cup...three weeks away!
I feel as though my body had gotten hit by Shelden Brown
After studying for an exam Saturday night I decided to go for a run, and this little run turned into an 8 mile trek. Midway through this journey I had realized how much of a mistake this was when I had to pause momentarily for a traffic light. My legs felt like weights as I restarted, and I had four miles to go with no path to shorten the run.
When I had finished I received a text from Michael Paul about our scheduled run the next day. Sunday morning's 7 mile session had every muscle in my body aching, and to make matters worse I was scheduled to officiate an extremely competitive u-18 boys match later that afternoon (for the record I had forgotten about the game at the time of my second run). I figured I ran about 4-6 miles throughout the match putting my total miles of running for a 24 hour period at 19-21 miles, and I am seriously hurting from it. So much that the majority of my day off was spent watching American Gangster...good movie.
I'm putting it on age and stupidity!
Cajun Cup in three weeks. Register here.
I'll be posting regarding the specifics of the shirts tomorrow evening.

Karen's Perfect Week
Karen and I participate in a college football competition in which we pick ten games each week against the spread. Don't worry, we don't have a weekly bookie or make long-distance calls to Vegas...although this past week I wish we had.
Karen picked 10/10 this past week, and in doing so became the third person to ever accomplish such a feat in deClouet College Football pick history. For those interested, I got 5/10.
Below is the statement by the commish:
"We have had our first perfect week of the year! Congrats goes out to Karen D. who had a 10 out of 10. Way to go Karen! With that perfect week Karen receives the bonus 3 pts. for a total of 13!!! As you will see below she has made a huge jump in the standings. This should be encouraging to everyone. Get a perfect week and make a move. Karen will receive the $10 for Week 7."
After informing Karen of this accomplishment she stated, "I guess all that research payed off!"

Hiroshima by Ben Folds
Ben Folds new album, Way to Normal, was released earlier this moth. Karen and I had been looking forward to this date, but missed it when it actually came around. I guess we've been to busy training for the Cajun Cup.

Busy, but still time to run!
Sorry for the absence all of last week. I've been tied up at work as I am now (in the middle of a nine-day stint). Anyway, while working nights I've found it extremely encouraging to run once I get off of work. I'm usually pretty wound up at 7:00 as a result of running around in the unit all night, and running a couple of miles is a pretty effective way of winding down.
Ran with Mike, Amy, and Karen this weekend, and I would say they were pretty productive runs. Saturday had us run 4 miles in the West Bayou neighborhood. 67 degrees at a 9-10 minute per mile pace is pretty relaxing. Mike and I took to expanding the distance Sunday morning, and we ran all of 5.5 miles (approximately) in a hair under 45 minutes. That's about 8:10/mile...need to pick up the pace, but a good spot to be four weeks prior to race day.
Looking to get "deClouet" silk-screened on a couple of racing shirts for the big day. Anyone interested needs to send me their size soon as I will be looking to place the order with Bell's Sporting Good some time in the next week.

Cajun Classic Training
This past Saturday saw a clan of deClouets gather together to train for the upcoming Cajun Cup 10K. John, Jeanne, Mike, Amy, Karen, and myself met at Reds to run four miles. With talk of vomiting and the other thing circulating I was having doubts that we would finish the four miles, but everyone did in a shade under 9:30/mile...without stopping. Very impressive!
Today Karen and I were in the middle of a small session when I said, "I forgot to eat lunch today", and within a minute I was forced to stop at mile 2.5. I had that hypoglycemic feeling with my hands trembling. The fact that I had to stop wasn't as surprising (since I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast and it was 6:00) as my wife not giving an inch. She kept pace, and finished out the mile. After wondering about in bewilderment for the last leg of the lap I had started to wonder if Karen had forgotten about me, but all that fretting was for naught as I turned the corner on Antigua to see Karen running towards me with a banana/water in hand.
It was the best banana I had ever had!

Within Reach
The Houston Football Association is a men's soccer league that's composed of eight divisions that play for relegation. It's a pretty competitive league that's comprised of former professional players from all over the world. There city champions, ASC New Stars, ended up winning the men's open national tournament in Jacksonville this past summer, which allowed them to play in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup (this should be AFC's goal).
Karen joined me on my trip to attain my last assessment for my upgrade to become a national referee, which has been a goal of mine for the past couple of years. The two teams that I were officiating were the ASC New Stars and the Houston Rangers. They are consistently fighting for the city championship year-end-year-out, and this match was as entertaining as it was billed to be. The game went well, and the assessment was passed, and now I'm just a little paperwork and a PT away from attaining my goal.
A little side note for you soccer junkies, Paul Dalglish was playing for the Rangers. Definitely a step ahead of the rest despite being on the losing-end of the competition.
